Solar Decathlon Europe 21/22

SDE 21/22 Event

The Solar Decathlon Europe in Wuppertal showed during the event phase from 10 - 26 June 2022 how cities can be built in a sustainable, environmentally friendly and socially compatible way. More than 115,000 visitors came to the "Solar Campus" - the competition site at Mirker Bahnhof.

The heart of the exhibition were the 16 accessible and fully functional demonstration buildings of the international teams, which had previously been built in Wuppertal in a two-week assembly period.

Each day of the event offered a different focus - from architecture and design to timber construction and craft to interior design and lighting design. Live music, gastronomy, country days and public award ceremonies completed the programme of the full event calendar.

Parade of the Decathletes through Wuppertal

On the morning of 19 May, all teams met for the first time in Wuppertal. They gathered in their team outfits at Laurentius-Platz in Wuppertal's city centre, where they were welcomed by the public and registered for the event phase. In good spirits, they went together to the Solar Campus, where the symbolic ground-breaking ceremony marked the start of the assembly phase.

Guided tours

During the event period, guided tours took place continuously during the opening days to make the competition and the innovative ideas of the teams accessible to a broad public. In the individual houses, the respective teams explained to the visitors in detail what is already possible in terms of sustainable living.

Award ceremonies

During the event phase, the teams' houses were tested in the ten competition disciplines and/or judged by an expert juryThe winning teams were announced at the respective award ceremonies in the event hall. Lectures by the jurors and a discipline-specific supporting programme were part of the events. The final award ceremony took place on 24 June. Based on the points achieved in all ten disciplines, the team RoofKIT was crowned the overall winner of the SDE 21/22.

In addition to the ten disciplines, the teams were evaluated in further categories and awarded with special prizes. These so-called Out of Competition Awards were given by institutions and associations from the field for particularly convincing topic-specific solutions.

You couldn't always be there? All award ceremonies can be watched on our YouTube channel.

Country and culture days

At SDE 21/22, the world was a guest in Wuppertal. On the Country and Culture Days, the teams presented their country or region. Whether interactive games, culinary and musical highlights or exciting exhibitions: The visitors had the chance to get to know different cultures, traditions and customs.

Excursion days for educational institutions

The Solar Campus was a destination for excursions from universities and other educational institutions. At our event, there was the chance to visit a wide range of specialist events and to exchange ideas with experts from various sectors.

We also had special offers for school classes before and during our event. In addition to age-appropriate guided tours (in German or English), our education experts from the University of Wuppertal and our cooperation partners organised exciting activities for young sustainability enthusiasts on the Education Days.
